The Past

The Corfu Trail has witnessed much of the island’s remarkable past, most well known are the adventures of the Durrell Family in the 1930s. Less well known is the life of Edward Lear in the mid 18thC. We see the legacy of the Byzantines in two of the island’s four forts.

In ancient times Corfu played host to Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. However perhaps its most important role in history was at the start of the Peloponnesian Wars and later the civil war between the Democrats and the Oligarchs, the latter being repeated today.
